Shiseido is a Japanese cosmetics and haircare brand that was founded in 1972. Although the brand is Japanese, the name Shiseido is in fact derived from Chinese. The company was founded by Arinobu Fukuhara, who had been the chief pharmacist for the Japanese navy for years. Shiseido was the first company to develop a product that resembles today's softening body creams. Shiseido also developed cosmetic powders in 7 different shades, providing something different to the white powder which was the sole product on offer.
Today, almost 20 different brands are sold under the Shiseido brand, including NARS cosmetics and Joico haircare products and fragrances. The brand's first fragrance was Zen, which was launched in 2000. Shiseido Beaute Prestige International also produces fragrances for respected designers such as Issey Miyake, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Narciso Rodriguez.
